No. The recognition engine downloads into your browser and runs there. The image never leaves your device, which is why this is safe for IDs, contracts and medical paperwork.

Why does the first run take longer?

The engine and the language data (a few megabytes) download once and are then cached. Later runs start almost instantly.

Does it read handwriting?

Not reliably. This is built for printed and on-screen text. Neat block capitals sometimes work; cursive generally does not.

For a clean screenshot or a flat scan, typically well above 95%. For an angled phone photo of a curled page, much less. The score shown after each run tells you which situation you are in.

Can it keep the original layout?
